Spartans Clip Baseball Club, 5-4
|
The San Francisco Spartans withstood an impressive performance by New York City designated hitter Dan McLaughlin to defeat the Baseball Club, 5-4, at NYC Field. McLaughlin went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. San Francisco reliever David West was the winner. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was Rob Gusmán. James Boyd closed the door for San Francisco, picking up his 8th save of the year.
San Francisco used a timely hit from Jason Wardlow to get the win. The catcher stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Spartans ahead, 5-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it made an impact.
Wardlow expressed little emotion after the game. "Every game we win now," he said, "is one less win we'll need to get in the end."
New York City now is 18-10.
