Whaley Clips Desperados for Cycle
|
Gary Whaley did everything he could for the Atlantic City Mighty Cocks today -- literally.
The 22-year-old third baseman hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run for the Mighty Cocks, going for the cycle and helping them get past the Syracuse Desperados, 8-1, at Mighty Cocks Ballpark.
"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game," Whaley reflected later. "It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat."
In a game headed for the record books, Whaley banged out 4 hits in 5 at-bats and totaled 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Speaking with the press about the feat, he attributed it to "a lot of luck."
"A triple is so hard to hit," he said. "To just decide to get one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible. Usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. There's a ton of luck in hitting for a cycle."
Gary Whaley tripled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, doubled in the 4th, grounded out in the 6th and hit a two-run home run off Ty Fields in the 8th.
For the year Whaley has hit .357 with 2 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 31 runs.
